AI flashcard maker: turn notes or a PDF into cards you will actually remember
Any AI can make flashcards from your notes now; the phrase “AI flashcard maker” describes a hundred tools and a feature of every chatbot. What separates the ones that help you pass from the ones that produce a pile of cards you never open is not the generation. It is what the cards look like, whether you checked them, and whether anything schedules them afterwards. This guide is about those three things, using Claude, ChatGPT or Grok as the maker and Flash as the place the cards live.
A card worth keeping
Every generated card should pass four checks. If it fails one, fix it or delete it before it enters the deck.
- Atomic. One fact. “List the side effects of amiodarone” becomes five cards, one per side effect, or you will remember three of them and mark the card Good anyway.
- Cued, not open-ended. The front should point at exactly one answer. “What is the therapeutic range for digoxin?” is a card; “Explain digoxin” is an essay.
- No yes/no. A fifty-percent guess rate teaches you nothing and inflates your grades.
- Cloze for numbers and sequences. “Normal potassium is […] mEq/L” tests the number; a question about potassium tests whether you can guess what the question is about.

Paste one section at a time. A whole lecture produces a hundred mediocre cards; a section produces fifteen good ones and lets you say “more on the mechanism, fewer on history” before moving on.
A textbook chapter
Ask for cards on the learning objectives first, then on anything in bold or in a table. Tables are where the testable numbers hide, and assistants handle them well when you point at them.
A PDF
Claude and ChatGPT both read uploaded PDFs. Name the pages or the heading you want cards from; “cards from the whole PDF” gives you a summary in card form rather than a study deck. For scanned PDFs, check that the text was actually extracted by asking the assistant to quote a sentence from the page first.
With Flash connected, the assistant writes the cards straight into a deck in your account instead of into the chat. Say “create a deck called Renal and add cards from these notes” and it does, and the cards are already scheduled for their first review.
Review the deck before you study it
Read every card once, the day it is made. Assistants occasionally round a range, merge two adjacent facts, or state a plausible number that is wrong. In Flash the deck page shows every card; in a chat, ask the assistant to list them. Delete the filler, fix the wrong one, and split the fat ones. This takes a few minutes and it is the step most people skip, which is why they end up not trusting their own decks.
The trap: generation without a scheduler
A flashcard has value on exactly one day: the day you are about to forget it. Twenty cards made in a chat and never asked again are a summary, not a study tool. Spaced repetition is the part that turns cards into memory, and it needs something that remembers what you got wrong on Tuesday and knows to bring it back on Friday.
Flash schedules every card with FSRS, the open-source algorithm that models how stable each memory is for you and schedules the next review for just before the predicted forgetting point. Cards you know well disappear for weeks; cards you keep missing come back tomorrow. When you study with your assistant, each answer is graded Again, Hard, Good or Easy and the grade feeds the model. When you study on the web, the four buttons do the same. Either way there is nothing to configure beyond the daily limits.
Studying the cards you made

Is there a free AI flashcard maker?
Claude, ChatGPT and Grok all write cards on their free tiers; connecting them to Flash needs a Flash account, which is free for your first 1,000 cards with every feature. ChatGPT's custom apps specifically need a paid ChatGPT plan; Claude's connectors do not.
Can I make Anki cards this way?

How many cards a day?
Flash defaults to a modest number of new cards per day and lets you raise it per deck or for today only. More new cards now means more reviews later; twenty a day is sustainable for most people, and the assistant can adjust the limit if you ask.
Does it work for languages, law, or code?
